  • Your Twin Cities Black Friday + Small Business Saturday Guide: 17 Local Gems I LOVE for Inspired Living

Just like that, Black Friday x Small Business Saturday are right around the corner... I must say, this season is one of my favorite times of the year for a plethora of reasons. There’s something so special about celebrating the creativity, heart, and hustle of local entrepreneurs—and this year, I’m leaning all the way in. I'm a talker, so feel free to skip to the front of the line right here . At The Plant Penthouse , I’m all about intentional living and creating beauty in every space for every story. As you take a leisurely stroll through these businesses, trust that these are the places I turn to when I want to elevate my routines, discover unique finds, or simply soak in inspiration. These are all personal connections of mine, and supporting these local gems aligns perfectly with my ethos at The Plant Penthouse, as each one reflects a story, a connection, and a deeper sense of care. After the 6-month sprint that was my campaign for Minneapolis School Board, rest, care and the warm embrace of community remain my north star. From cozy plant shops to curated galleries, luxurious skincare, and nourishing treats (...for the body and soul), these small businesses I am sharing not only offer exceptional experiences, but are brought to life by special people whose passion and purpose make them truly one of a kind. So, ahead of Small Business Saturday, I wanted to curate a list of Twin Cities businesses that embody creativity, self-care, and inspiration. These are the spaces and faces that bring joy and meaning to my life, and I hope they’ll do the same for you. Whether you’re looking for thoughtful gifts, a little self-care, or just a reason to explore, this guide is especially for you. Let’s make this Small Business Saturday (...and the entire holiday season) one to remember by supporting the gems that make the Twin Cities shine bright. And with that, allow me to introduce you to a few of my favorite faces, stories, and offerings that will make your holiday heart sing. * Flips sign to 'open' * In no particular order, these doors are open for business! Might I direct you to a specific aisle? Right this way... Self Care Plant Parenting Gorgeous Gifting Sips and Treats THE BUSINESSES I LOVE A SELF CARE Sanctuary 1. The Skin Standard Website:   The Skin Standard Instagram:   @theskinstandard _ Location:  4920 Excelsior Blvd, St. Louis Park, MN My journey with Jessica (one of the founders of The Skin Standard) has been nothing short of transformative. Beyond treatments, appointments here are a blend of therapy and science lessons, emphasizing holistic care. In short: I swear by their approach to skin health. I first met Jess in late pandemic / early post-pandemic(?!) times when my cystic acne flare-ups were at peak intensity, and my self-esteem (and all-around vulnerability) reached lows that were hard to describe. I firmly believe that loving the skin you're in is such an important part of 'feeling at home', and Jess has never once made me feel self-conscious, even in moments when I certainly did. Thinking about how lovely and pivotal she has been in my skin journey makes me teary-eye (and I AM a crier). GO SEE JESSICA. I love her. The Skin Standards science-backed treatments, like the Perfect Derma Peel®—a medium-depth peel blending various acids and glutathione (which safely removes outer skin layers for a brighter complexion)—have consistently left my skin G-L-O-W-I-N-G. Recently, I experienced their new Glacial Rx Gloss treatment, which is going to be a staple in my skincare maintenance routine. Because skincare is an investment, I appreciate that Skin Standard is never a product-pushin mill, which I find so freeing. I'm able to take in the information and make my own conclusions (and trust theirs in return). Ok, enough gushing, they have a special Small Business Saturday special I want to tell you about! This Black Friday weekend, take advantage of their gift card sale  and a special Small Business Saturday  offer! Book an appointment on Small Business Saturday for redemption within the remainder of 2024, and receive a free Dermaplane add-on  with an Enzyme, BioRePeel, or custom facial. Treat yourself to an appointment today ! Your skin—and spirit—will thank you. 2. W Minneapolis – The Foshay Location:  821 S Marquette Ave, Minneapolis, MN Website:   W Minneapolis – The Foshay Instagram:   @wminneapolis I love a local, historic landmark. Having served as the Artist in Residence for the W, I've spent many mornings (and evenings) at W Minneapolis – The Foshay. Firsthand, I can tell you the staff's dedication ensures a 5-star experience, and the location is wonderful to bop around downtown! I've enjoyed visiting Prohibition, their rooftop bar, for a mocktail (and I hear the cocktails and other beyvs are equally delightful, too)! Tis the season to treat yourself! Plant ParentinG Havens 3. Tonkadale Greenhouse Location:  3739 Tonkawood Rd, Minnetonka, MN Website:   Tonkadale Greenhouse Instagram:   @tonkadale Tonkadale Greenhouse was the first plant shop to collaborate with The Plant Penthouse back when we were just sprouting in 2020. It was also the first 'on-site' location I filmed with for The Jason Show ! It feels fitting to commemorate with photos from one of my earliest trips to Tonkadale (recognize the times by the additional headgear?!): Tonkadale's owner, Jessie, has created a phenomenal shopping experience and given me so much appreciation for the dedication required to grow, nurture, and educate, in community. Jessie opened her arms and Greenhouse doors to me at a time when The Plant Penthouse wasn't a name too many recognized—and made me feel so valued. That matters to me. Before I get sappy (I really do love everyone on this list), spending time in the Greenhouse is both restorative and inspiring for new and old plant parents alike, making it a must-visit for plant enthusiasts! I come for the plants and stay for the inspiration (have you seen their array of vintage and antiques?!). Tonkadale really does have it all. 4. Northland Botanical Location:  Based in the Twin Cities (check online for pop-ups!) Website:   Northland Botanical Instagram:   @northland.botanical Ben, the owner of Northland Botanical , is my visionary of a friend and someone I admire deeply for his expertise and passion for rare and exotic plants—living works of art! Talking shop with him is always inspiring—his wealth of knowledge and perspective is honestly unmatched. If you've happened to chance upon the magnetic experience that is the annual Master Gardener Houseplant Sale , Northland has been the incredible donor of our rare plant selections you've shopped! If you missed the sale this October (or arrived after they sold out!), you have a chance to shop straight from the source! This Black Friday weekend is a rare opportunity to shop in-person, pop-up style, at Northland Botanical ’s trendy studio. Check their socials for timing and offerings, but trust me, plant enthusiasts: this is not to be missed! Not local? Visit their website ! 5. Mother Co. Plants Location:   2400 N 2nd St, Minneapolis, MN 55411 Website:   Mother Co. Plants Instagram:   @shopmother The vibes at Mother Co. Plants  are something that just have to be experienced. The aesthetic is warm, inviting, and simply an oasis—a perfect haven for plant lovers. When I moved back home after a stint in Seattle, I was drawn to Mother Co. for their cool kid vibes, array of statement-making plants, and it reminded me of my favorite shop in Seattle: the infamous, but sadly now closed Plant Shop Seattle —where I purchased my very first plant—a Bird of Paradise. With that nostalgia in mind, it was only fitting I continue the tradition of breaking in the plant parent budget with, you guessed it, a Bird of Paradise . Aesthetics aside, what makes this place truly special are the owners (now, Mickey and Ben!), whose warmth and passion infuse the shop with something oh-so magical. Many a day this plant shop has served as a peaceful, mind-resetting sanctuary. To that statement, my bank account would 100% disagree, but that is high praise to what Mother has curated! From a perfected selection of houseplants of all sizes, to timeless pottery, you're sure to leave with something. Visit their website  or shop in-store for the real wonder! Gifting Gurus 6. Kickernick Art Gallery Location:  430 N 1st Ave, Minneapolis, MN Website:   Kickernick Art Gallery Instagram:   @kickernickgallery Speaking of works of art! For an experiential shopping moment featuring all local artists, you'll want to give Kickernick Gallery a visit to deck the halls (and your walls) with art that speaks to your soul. The gallery Curator, Christy Frank, has an eye for beauty and storytelling. I have been blessed to know Christy for a few years, as she was my former Plant Penthouse studio neighbor. Christy has always inspired me with her impeccable taste and dedication to local artistry. For a truly unique gift (or a treat for yourself!), Kickernick is the place to go. On Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, they will be providing festive sips and snacks throughout the day, as well as a gift bag for the first 20 visitors! 7. Spoonful of Faith by Jena HoLliday Website:   Spoonful of Faith Instagram:   @aspoonfuloffaith I’ve known Jena since our childhood Sunday School days, and watching her artistry grow has been such a joy. Her work—vibrant, soulful, and inspiring—brings light into every space (...including my creative studio—see below!). Jena has several exciting projects happening right now, making it the perfect time to support her brand. From empowering stationery to art prints and apparel that radiate positivity, her creations are ideal for thoughtful gifting. Shop her website ! 8. The Foundry Home Goods Location:  905 N 3rd St, Minneapolis, MN Website:   The Foundry Home Goods Instagram:   @thefoundryhomegoods The Foundry is one of those rare shops where every item feels purposeful and beautiful. I have immense admiration for the love and intention Anna has put into this business over the years (with big moves to boot!). This is where I find timeless pieces, with personality, that elevate my home—perfect for thoughtful gifting or your own home refresh! Their beeswax candles are not one to miss. Also not one to miss? Ruby (the sweetest shop dog in town): 9. J. Atelier Location:   212 N 3rd Ave #100 , Minneapolis, MN Instagram:   @shopjatelier J. Atelier is where I unearthed my obsession with oushak rugs (...that have now found a happy home at The Plant Penthouse). The “J’s” (the founders, whose names all start with J—Julia and Jacqueline and Jennifer) are so warm and fun to chat with—you won’t want to leave! This store is an absolute treasure trove for design lovers. 10. Ū mei Location:   212 N 3rd Ave Suite 104, Minneapolis, MN Website:   Shop Umei Instagram:   @shopumei What can I say? Shop Umei is pure magic. The founder (hi, Susan!) has an incredible eye, curating items that feel like they have a story behind them—and the best part? They truly do. From jewelry to paper products and home decor, each piece is something you’ll treasure. Pair a trip to Shop Umei with stops at their neighboring gems, J. Atelier, The Foundry, and Northland Botanical, for a day of inspired shopping! Sips & TREATS 11. The Dripping Root Location:   4002 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis, MN Website:   The Dripping Root Instagram:   @thedrippingroot The Dripping Root is a true gem, offering fresh-pressed juices that are as vibrant and nourishing as the people behind them. Catiesha and her remarkable mom (Mommy Drip!) have become like family to me. I can tell you that this founder's love, joy, creativity and resilience shine through in what she serves. Catiesha’s ongoing innovation is so exciting to witness, and every visit feels like a warm embrace. If you’re looking for a refreshing way to fuel your day, this is the place to be! 12. The Get Down Coffee Co. Location:   1500 N 44th Ave, Minneapolis, MN Website:   The Get Down Coffee Co. Instagram:   @thegetdowncoffeeco During my MPS school board campaign , The Get Down Coffee Co. welcomed me with open arms, and their support is something I will treasure until the end of TIME. Beyond their incredible sense of community, their pastries and beverages are a treat every single visit. I switched to tea a few years back, but make an exception for their Brown Sugar Banana Latte. Hear me when I say, I cannot get enough ! Whether you’re looking for a great cup of coffee or a space to feel connected, The Get Down delivers on all fronts. 13. Northeast Tea House Location:  708 Central Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN Website:   Northeast Tea House Instagram:   @neteahouse The Northeast Tea House  is a special retreat, and for good reason: it's a no-laptops allowed sanctuary. I had the pleasure of featuring this lovely tea house in my MSP Home & Design article “Spill the Tea” (Spring 2024 issue) . Their serene space is perfect for enjoying high-quality matcha, conversation and a curated selection of teas—flavors that certainly e levate my tea routine. For Black Friday on into the weekend Northeast Tea House will be offering 50% OFF of one ounce of loose leaf tea with the purchase of tea-ware. Pencil a visit onto your calendar for a moment to reset! 14. Lucille’s Bottle Shop Location:  24 W 7th Pl, St. Paul, MN 55102 Website:   Lucille's Bottle Shop Instagram:   @lucillesbottleshop As a mocktail enthusiast, I can’t say enough good things about Lucille’s Bottle Shop (with new roots in St. Paul!). From my first run-in meeting Alex, the founder, I just loved her spirit and genuine joy for supporting fellow businesses. The icing on the cake was her immense knowledge and thoughtfully curated selection of non-alcoholic beverages—a dream for anyone who loves elevated sipping (no shade to the Shirley Temple). Her passion for quality and community shines through in every aspect of the shop. Their new digs are an absolute must-visit, and do keep your eyes out for pop-ups and partnerships! Lucille’s was also featured in my Spring Heirloom Modern  spread (notice I only write about things I actually love). With their newly launched membership program offering personalized subscription boxes, you can explore a variety of beverages tailored to your taste! Whether you're seeking unique non-alcoholic options or looking to join their membership program, Lucille's Bottle Shop is a must-visit in my book. 15. Honour Café Location:  3109 W 50th St, Minneapolis, MN Website:   Honour Café Instagram:   @honourcoffeempls I have been a loyal patron since before my Seattle stint (aka the days this was Empire Coffee...anyone remember that?!). I love a neighborhood barista, and the conversations I have here make Honour Café feel like a gift to myself every time I visit—not to mention, I am hooked on their açaí bowls! I recently met Sam, one of the new owners and love her passion for creating community, and the energy they are bringing to this corner of Northeast. The Honour brand is in GREAT hands! Visit their website or stop by for the Pura Vida bowl with dolce de leche. 16. Brim Restaurant Location:   2919 Knox Ave S suite 100, Minneapolis, MN 55408 Website:   Brim Restaurant Instagram:   @brim_restaurant My love for Brim is officially everlasting. While their menu is jam-packed with incredible options, if you’re looking for a recommendation, order the Kimchi Rice + Beef and top it off with the Almond Chocolate Cherry or (...and) Macadamia Nut Chocolate Cranberry cookies. You can thank me later! Just when I thought things couldn’t be any sweeter, I had the chance to team up with Kate, Brim’s incredible owner, and she proved why this restaurant is truly special. Over the summer, I was looking for ways to build community through my budding Ms. Shayla Reads  initiative—a program I've jumpstarted to provide virtual and in-person read-alouds to engage children and caregivers in creative learning, and foster a love for literacy. Without ever meeting me before, Kate stepped in without hesitation and provided nourishing treats for the families participating in our very first Ms. Shayla Reads in the Park event. I must tell you: the strawberry cobbler bars were an absolute hit, and the edible flowers? The ultimate attention grabber! Kate’s act of kindness, done with no expectation of recognition, speaks volumes about her character and why I will forever hold Brim close to my heart. Brim is a true testament to the kind of community we’re building here in Minneapolis. If you haven’t experienced all that Kate and her team have to offer, now is certainly the time. 17. Bebe Zito Ice Cream Location:  704 W 22nd St, Minneapolis, MN (The OG home base) Website:   Bebe Zito Ice Cream Instagram:   @bebe.zito Did I. ..save the best for last?! Founders Gabby and Ben are dear, dear friends turned family (if you have seen me cry, you pass go right into eternal relative), and I cannot say enough good things about who they are as humans or the phenomenally joyful brand they've created. They even collaborated to create a namesake Plant Penthouse  plant-based flavor (now in the Spring Break archives, but is it due for a comeback?)! Bebe Zito has recently been honored in a national ice cream competition  for their vegan delight, Marvelous Mrs. Hazel flavor—a chocolate hazelnut base packed with chocolate cookie dough chunks. Believe them when they say , " It's so creamy you would never believe it's vegan!" With rotating flavors, their innovative approach to ice cream makes them a must-visit this season—and every season.  I owe my friend Tommy for the initial introduction to this haven, and it has been a googley-eyes kind of love ever since. I am their number one fan. Visit their website for their current flavors AND make sure to stop by their Uptown or Woodbury location on Black Friday (November 29!) to take advantage of their one day only buy one, get one gift card promotion ! It was a joy to scope out some of my favorite gift ideas in the Bachman's greenhouse and beyond. Amidst this season's joyous whirlwind, the quest for the perfect gift transforms into a heartwarming mission at The Plant Penthouse . Today, with excitement bubbling like my favorite Limoncello La Croix, I'm delighted to present to you: The Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide. Whether you're a seasoned plant enthusiast, a connoisseur of home decor, or a last-minute gift seeker, rest assured, I've got you covered! So, don your metaphorical boutonniere or corsage, and join me down these picturesque aisles—they're not just shopping lanes; they're our festive pathways to gifting bliss! With that, let's explore ten easy, last-minute-friendly ideas that will have you ready to say 'I Do' to the perfect gifts this holiday season. Gift #1 | Let There Be (Low) Light: Easy Care Houseplants *Gathers shoppers in aisle one and gestures to left * Here, let us discover the beauty of low-light tolerant houseplants – the perfect gift for both green thumbs and beginners. From the timeless Snake Plant to the vibrant ZZ's, allow me to quickly guide you through my go-to resilient warriors from a lush selection that adds life to any space: Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum) Light:  Adaptable to various light conditions, including low light. Water:  Keep soil evenly moist; allow the top inch to dry before watering. Thoughts:  Excellent for hanging baskets; vines trail gracefully. Snake Plant (Sansevieria) Light:  Thrives in indirect light, but can tolerate low light conditions. Water:  Allow soil to dry between waterings; overwatering is the main concern. Thoughts:  Well-suited for forgetful waterers, prefers drier conditions. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) Light:  Thrives in low to bright, indirect light*; can tolerate some neglect. Water:  Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Thoughts:   Extremely low-maintenance; my top choice for beginners. Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen) Light:  Thrives in low to bright, indirect light. Water:  Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Thoughts:  I love the varied leaf patterns which add personality to any space. And for extra credit, here are two additional (personal) fan favorites that can also tolerate a moody ambiance: Philodendron Light:  Prefers bright, indirect light; can tolerate lower light conditions. Water:  Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Thoughts:  Known for heart-shaped leaves! I alternate between pothos and heart-leaf Philodendron as my vining go-tos. Dracaena Deremensis (Corn Plant) Light:  Prefers bright, indirect light; can adapt to lower light. Water:  Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Thoughts:  The tall, arching leaves make a striking visual statement! *And just what is bright, indirect light anyways?! About 6 to 8 hours of filtered or diffused sunlight per day does the job. Bright, indirect light typically refers to a location where a plant receives strong, filtered sunlight. It's an area where your plant is exposed to plenty of light, but the direct rays of the sun are diffused or filtered by a sheer curtain, blinds, or other materials. I always ask myself, if I sat here for 8 hours, would I feel the rays but not sunburn? If the answer is YES, we've found our spot! It's like creating a cozy holiday atmosphere for your green companions to thrive and spread some festive cheer. We love that. Gift #2 | Pottery Panache: Planter Pots Elevate your plant game with stunning planter pots. With so many unique offerings these days, there are a variety of styles to suit every taste! • TIPS TO SOAR WITH YOUR BIRD OF PARADISE

Happy Sunday Residents! I'm feeling free as a Bird...of Paradise! In fact, see below stage right for actual footage of me vibing as you read this. Why, you ask? Because you're here and ready to give your Bird of Paradise the tender, loving care it deserves! No secret, I'm a Bird of Paradise SUPERFAN. I own three (in order from largest to smallest): Biggie, Bella, and Bebe! Since we've been getting along gingerly for quite a while, I think it's as good a time as any to share how I keep mine happy at The Plant Penthouse! I would love to help you do the same, Residents, so it's time to soar! For the Bird of Paradise (BoP), or any other plant you add to your residence, step one is to understand where your new family member originates from. History is oh-so important to keep your babies flying high! Because this isn't a research assignment, I'll give you my BoP highlights! * Excitedly puts on fake glasses and opens book * WHAT'S IN A NAME? Did you know the Bird of Paradise , scientifically given the family name of Strelitziaceae, was named after Queen Charlotte, the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (so regal, right)? The most common house plant varieties include the Strelitzia nicolai and Strelitzia reginae. In the right climate, the Bird of Paradise has the ability to produce exotically colorful flowers, who's likeness resembles that of tropical birds, hence the name! You clearly have an eye for the finer things in life, so let's keep your Royal Highness happy! ORIGINATION STATION Now that you know the family lineage, let's talk climate! The Bird of Paradise plant originates from South Africa. This means that your regal family member LOVES humidity (a weekly spritz works wonders!), well draining soil (which means they do not like to stand in lukewarm water...but, I mean...would you?), and appreciate lighting that resembles your favorite tropical getaway (more on this below!). The Bird of Paradise may produce splits/rips in the leaves, but never fear! This happens because in nature, the splits help wind pass through this intelligent being to keep them firmly planted. What a leader. LET THERE BE LIGHT...AND WATER! Forever the fun, fine print, am I right? The primary reason I have such a deep love for the Bird of Paradise is because Sir Finicky is not usually in their royal court. These plants are relatively straight-forward to care for, so here are my key factors to keep in mind: LIGHTING : Lighting impacts your BoP. Think about the total number of hours the sun will shine on your beauty. Remember when we learned the Bird of Paradise is native to South Africa? This tells us they can handle direct sunlight (think 6-8 hours of light, from a southern or western facing window!), or bright, indirect light (we're talking partial sun - the kind of sun that allows you to feel it's warmth but won't leave you with sunburn)! If you cant give them this lifestyle, I would recommend keeping this relationship in the admiration phase, at your favorite plant shop. :) WATER : Keep it lukewarm to prevent shock and keep an eye on things. I use tap-water, but if you notice burning of your leaves, this could indicate high salt content, which means distilled water would be best. Remember, they can have an appreciation for the finer things in life and we are here to serve! Depending on the sunlight within your Penthouse, your Bird of Paradise may require more, or less, frequent waterings. TIP: Because BoPs like to dry out in-between waterings, here's a measurement factor I use to determine if it's watering time: When I stick my finger in the soil, if it is dry up to my knuckle, it is time for a watering! If that depth (which is about an inch) still has moisture, your plant is hydrated and basking in the sun! Early on, I was VERY heavy handed. To prevent drowning your majestic investment, I recommend using a base tray, or a planter with a drainage hole, to best monitor if you went a little too far. If I still see water in the base tray after 10-15 minutes, I use a towel to soak up the excess. Keep calm and carry on! HUMIDITY : Who doesn't want to feel the essence of tropical air?! When misting, to prevent burning of your leaves, I do this either early in the morning, or after sunset so they water has a chance to evaporate before the sun can cause any scorching damage. Once a week is a-ok! SOIL : The Bird of Paradise likes well-draining soil that can retain moisture (you don't want the water to run right through it!). A MiracleGro pearlite mixture (with those little white puffs) is my easy go-to to help control drainage, and you can buy potting soil already formulated for adequate drainage at any home improvement or plant shop! TROUBLE IN PARADISE? There are a few red flags to look out for when nurturing your tropical beauty. First up: your Royal Highness carries a secret, and potentially lethal, weapon: they can be poisonous to cats, dogs, and horses. And for your tiny humans (because I don't foresee you trying to get a taste), mild gastrointestinal symptoms like dehydration, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can occur if they try to make a meal of your greenery. Poison Control is a wonderful resource to keep in mind if you have any serious concerns, because as we know, I am no Doctor! Second : Do you see yellowing or curling leaves? DON'T PANIC! Plants are all about survival of the fittest, and those lower, smaller leaves, or that elderly leafy limb may have reached it's end of life journey, which will provide that much needed energy to newer growth. Prune and keep it pushing! Now, if you are consistently seeing these symptoms on non-basal leaves, yellowing is a key indicator of over-watering or inadequate light. Curling leaves, you say? Your BoP is most likely thirsty! Keeping a constant eye on your regal beauty is the best remedy to catch any deterioration in the act. Lastly: In this royal family, appearances matter so you'll want to keep the leaves clean! Think of your Bird of Paradise staring back at you and saying, wipe me down (...in a Boosie voice, no less lol). This will help prevent pests (mealy bugs, whiteflies, aphids, oh my!), because who wants those around?! For preventative maintenance, I spray my foliage with a Neem oil mixture monthly, but warm soapy water works wonders, too. It smells like garlic, but hey, I have no pesky pests! Another option is a pre-made insecticide you can purchase from a local greenhouse or specialty plant shop. At a pest sighting, you can increase frequency to weekly, or however often your insecticide of choice indicates. You've got options! • The Art of Reflection: How A Duluth Vacation Stay Transformed the Trajectory of My Year

For whoever needs to hear this (particularly for the season we're entering into): rest and reflection are productive; or so, I'm learning... A s the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Turning the (figurative) calendar page to November has begun steeping the most wonderful aroma of reflection in my life. Like the steam rising from a hot seasonal brew (spiced apple cider, anyone?), for me, memories waft the strongest in moments of rest. Perhaps this month serves as a reset button; a final, measured step to accomplish that last *big* project (or three), review wins and lessons, and consider the catalysts that will serve as momentum into the new year. Part reflection, part travel guide (for those like myself new to the wonders of Duluth, MN), may your joy overflow in this season and beyond. A Quest to FILL MY CUP Looking back, I started the year strong in who I was and where I was headed. No audacious goal was too hot to drink in. To know me is to know I can operate from a 'gird up your loins' mentality in the face of most challenges, so I did not foresee myself exiting Q1 feeling like a crumpled, empty cup. I found myself in a place of exhaustion and stress that I did not know how to fully comprehend. When a February vacation prematurely ended in a rare and climactic health journey to recovery for my sister (the kind of front row seat no one prays for), I had nothing left to give.* *To Cliff Note this story for just a moment, after winter turned to spring, my sister is, in her doctors’ words, a walking miracle . While she's not a life sharer OR social media user (we’re so similar! lolz), I’ve already told her she’ll have to chronicle her phenomenal story for the people at home one of these days soon. Until that day arrives, do know that she is doing amazingly well, and we’re just over the moon thankful and in awe of her fantastic team of doctors and the Lord Jesus Christ for her recovery. In the thick of everything, I may have never officially had the opportunity to thank each of you who sent messages, checked-in and showed so much love surrounding Michelle, and I want to thank you from the deepest depths of my heart. Please know that each note meant (and still means) more than you’ll ever know. Now where were we... The unexpected chapter in this story was, perhaps, my own recovery. As winter turned to spring, I kept reiterating to myself that as long as I had my sister, once we returned home, everything (and everyone ) would be ok...and life could (and would) immediately resume as "normal". Never having experienced a life event of this magnitude, I was in no way prepared to process all that had been simmering for so long. Like a newborn walking for the first time, regular tasks felt grandiose, and I hadn't the slightest idea what my next steps would look like...or when exactly I would be ready to walk again...let alone run at the speed of life I started the year with. For anyone who has experienced such a period in life, know that my compassion abounds. I suppose that is the wild beauty of life - to feel deeply - and to believe that as long as one foot goes in front of the other, we will be able to look back on how far we've come with immense gratitude to belong in the land of the living. As spring turned to summer...and summer turned to fall, I entered a new season of my own: hope. It was on this quest of (quite uncomfortable) reflection that I realized there was one ingredient I had blatantly ignored in this recipe for healing: rest . Choosing to fill my cup from this abundant endowment, I knew it was time for a change in scenery. And I found just the spot, with my life defying best friend. Brewing Comfort: Where to Stay for a Relaxing Duluth Getaway Maybe we can blame my Hallmark movie watching habits, but I have always dreamed of staying in a quaint location (...that also happens to be within close driving distance to the comforts...and securities of life). Meeting all of the above boxes, my wishes came to fruition through the equal parts modern and picturesque Park Point Carriage House , under the North Shore Host Co. umbrella (aka the folks who own the Enger Lofts Hotel, Cafe and Marketplace ) ! To know me is to know I am usually an avid hotel stay enthusiast (I am a former Expedia employee who loves a good loyalty program), however this home was MAGNIFICENT, and better than any hotel I could have chosen. From the tiny touches (like all the accoutrements for Michelle's morning coffee) to daily walks to take in the St. Louis Bay and Lake Superior waterfront, being just over the bridge from downtown Duluth, we couldn't have asked for a better location. Within walking distance, I was also able to stroll the Franklin Square beach with my morning cuppa tea and that was delightful. There is something to be said for waking up to complete serenity. And after living in Seattle for a few years, being able to see ships on the water felt as familiar as visiting an old friend. It was at this home that I spent a majority of my time reflecting on where I've been this year and making intentional next steps for where I am going. Doing this activity away from my daily distractions and self-imposed *must do's* of the day reframed how I am finishing this year (for a another post, perhaps). Though seemingly small, it was an immense joy to have such a lovely abode to call my own, even if just for a few days. I had to let out a sigh to myself because my sister has all but BEGGED me to set aside time for a Duluth getaway with her and every, perfectly legitimate, entrepreneurial excuse arose. It will certainly not take another near-death experience for me to schedule our next stay. My how times have changed. My unsolicited advice from all of this? Buy the coffee, take the trip. I now allocate a considerably larger amount of time and resources for the minute and major joys in life. Awaken Your Senses: Feasts and Finds through Duluth & Beyond I'm no food critic, but apparently in my world, good food is certainly good for the soul. With Park Point as our basecamp, here are a few of my most loved places that left an imprint on my mind (...and palate) that I need to go back soon for!: 〰️ Love Creamery 's cookie butter ice cream (@lovecreamery) 〰️ Lake Avenue Bar and Restaurant for the Lake Avenue burger 〰️ OMC Smokehouse for the entire menu (@omc.smokehouse) 〰️ Flora North (@floranorthMN) was closed when I walked by but it looked so cute! 〰️ The Spice & Tea Exchange (@spiceandtea.duluth) felt like an aromatic candy shop! 〰️ At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe for the PANCAKES...and the maple mascarpone (@atsarastablechestercreekcafe) 〰️ Glensheen Mansion for the upcoming Holiday Tour (@glensheenmansion) 〰️ A roadtrip to the Lutsen Mountains (which are, in fact, mountainous and I was humbled!!). I saw Lutsen will be having their sightseeing gondola rides this Saturday November 4th & on November 11th and I highly recommend the experience! 〰️ Speaking of Lutsen, Fika Coffee was worth the pitstop - and the line! 〰️ …& pie from Betty's Pies …AND Rustic Inn Cafe because I had 2 slices from each and they were DIVINE (@bettyspies + @rusticinncafe) 〰️ Gordy's Hi Hat burgers, fries x onion rings receive honorable mention for when they re-open next season (@gordyshihat) What did I miss? My suggestions book is forever open for your shares! Stirring Up A Well-Balanced Life Embracing balance, I also brought along a host of Sakara meals and beverages (love the tea and metabolism lattes x powder)...WHO AM I? Because sharing is caring, using the code SHAYLASAKARA will save you 20% off your first meal plan program or any wellness essentials if you've been looking for a reason to give them a try! When I want to lean into being plant forward without the fuss, or just need to hit the reset button on my gut microbiome, I opt for their 3 or 5-day meal programs (which usually equates to ~1 week/month). I truly believe plants are powerful medicine for the mind, body and spirit! The Final SIP It always arrives sooner than we'd like, doesn't it? To finish today's cup with you, the Plant Penthouse was built on the daily expressions of joyful living, regardless of circumstance; and I can wholeheartedly say I have a refreshed outlook on just what that truly means. Here's to turning over a new leaf, whether you are finishing, amidst or just beginning to drink from your fresh cup (or perspective) in life. • Poinsettias at Center Stage: Introducing The Origin, Styling and Upkeep of a Holiday Starlet

*Theater curtains open slowly* As eyes focus center stage, allow me to introduce you to one floral sensation deserving of her moment in lights: the Poinsettia. With over 42 million of these tropical (yes, tropical!) treasures projected to be sold over the holidays , this undisputed seasonal starlet is contributing over $215 million to the U.S. economy at the retail level (according to the USDA ); stealing the spotlight as the largest potted flower crop grown in the United States! Playbill Director's Note Before we start the show, might we give a round of applause to our dear friends at Bachman's Floral and Garden for sponsoring all four acts of today's performance (where I pranced downstage amongst 85,000* Poinsettias within their Lakeville, Minnesota greenhouses!)! Talk about a star-studded set. With that, let the enchantment begin! * There were over 4,000 Poinsettias in the first greenhouse I stood in, alone! Act 1: The Origin Story Straight away, we have a botanical drama unfolding on this horticultural stage: the layered origin story of the Cuetlaxóchitl, or " flower that withers " (now recognized by her common US stage name of Poinsettia). In a tropical plot twist, our floral star makes a grand entrance from southern Mexico, in the enchanting region of Taxco del Alarcon, first captivating audiences with vibrant bracts (leaves) and green foliag e. *Looks back at Playbill and whispers. ..* did you see the University of Minnesota Extension note that Poinsettia flowers are actually comprised of bracts (frequently mistaken as colorful petals), and tiny greenish-yellow flowers in the center, called cyathia .?! Moreover, the vibrant-hued bracts attract insects to the cyathia flowers and drop after pollination. What intentional character development! With our protagonist now introduced on stage, let's take in the grander scene as Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779–1851), the amateur botanist and inaugural United States ambassador to Mexico, discovers our botanical beauty during his travels in the 19th century. Sending cuttings of the plant back to his home in South Carolina, the Poinsettia's journey from the warm embrace of Mexico to the festive landscapes of holiday celebrations around the world is a theatrical tale of natural beauty and cultural intrigue, hence the global flora sensation. To award Mr. Poinsett's pivotal role, our vibrant holiday plant was aptly named after him, with Congress later declaring December 12 as National Poinsettia day in 2002. With many adaptations of this tale, our latest character research (courtesy of the Almanac ) detailed how the Nahua people discovered the remarkable properties of Poinsettias, turning them into invaluable resources for both practical and aesthetic purposes. The Poinsettia played a prominent part for the Aztecs, who harnessed their vibrant hues to craft a regal purple dye for clothing and cosmetics, leaving an indelible mark on the fashion and beauty practices of their time. These versatile plants also contributed to the Aztecs' medicinal knowledge. The milky white sap wax from poinsettias became a key ingredient in their medicinal repertoire, specifically utilized to concoct a potent medicine for treating fevers. What a riveting scene! Act 2: Symbolism & Traditions Dearest theatergoer, have you found yourself studying the playbill to understand the requited union between our starlet and Christmas? It’s entrance into the holiday season is a nod to both the full December blooms (as the days shorten during winter), and the ancient Aztec celebration of winter festivities where this tropical sensation stole the show; becoming an enduring symbol of warmth, purity, renewal, and merriment on a vibrant stage of cultural legacies. Within the rich tapestry of tradition, the Poinsettia is woven into Mexican folklore as 'Flor de Nochebuena,' or the "Flower of the Holy Night". According to this legend, a young child named Pepita was not able to afford an offering for her church's Christmas Eve service, and instead gathers some weeds on her way, fashioning them into a humble bouquet. As the scene develops, Pepita places the bouquet at the altar, and the weeds miraculously transform into a colorful array of poinsettias! I've found that flora of all cultivars prominently find themselves in starring roles for their ability to evoke emotion, sentiment and personal connection from the toughest crowds...in both the most difficult and most cherished of times. Act 3: Made for Seasonal Style In this festively decorated production, we’ve found the Poinsettia to shine brightest in storied moments on mantels, tables, festive arrangements, and truly, anywhere where they can be *seen* in your dwelling's primary scene. Whether traditional red or in hues of pink, yellow, cream, purple, orange or green (...to name a few); with over 100 varieties in rotation to choose from in this seasonal theater, the Poinsettia's rich symbolism of joy and love serve as a recognized visual crescendo, accentuating personal design interpretations. While many come in holiday-forward foil, as the director of your show, you have the freedom to style in planters that coordinate with existing decor or arrangements. By surrounding them with supporting cast members – like warm string lights, colorfully curated ornaments, garland and holiday greenery – your stunning set immediately becomes award-worthy! Whether adorning your home or gifting to loved ones, let your Poinsettia be the show-stopping centerpiece, bringing a touch of natural elegance to the grand production of seasonal styling. I am on the edge of my seat to see what you do with this script! Act 4: Caring for Poinsettias Cue the spotlight on poinsettia care! When scouting for your Poinsettia, consider the cyathia ( the tiny flowers at the center introduced in Act I) as the freshness indicator in this production. A vibrant cyathia promises a long-lasting show, but beware of the fully yellowed ones – they signal the plant has had its curtain call, and the bloom's grand performance is nearing it's end. With the right set design (...or natural conditions), did you know that Poinsettias can grow up to 13 feet tall, taking on the character of a blooming shrub? While that would be a mesmerizing sight, this scene was created to ensure our botanical sensation may thrive in your homes as well as she does under the big (greenhouse) lights. Speaking of lights, ensure you can provide bright-indirect light (around 6 hours of sunshine), daily. In addition to proper light, our starlet requires hydration to look her best as dry conditions will cause wilting. The poinsettia loves moist, well-draining soil but detests standing water, so keep the soil slightly damp without drowning (aka floating in excess water) if you don't appreciate a dramatic ending. From our extended show experience with the Poinsettia, might we recommend a weekly check-in to gauge needs, watering when the soil feels dry one to two inches down in the soil? While you're checking in on your Poinsettia, also consider ensuring a steady temperature, as this leading lady prefer s it between 65-75°F during her performance. This means you will not want to expose her to the winter elements or keep her in the car during extended holiday shopping! Upon her grand home entrance, shield your Poinsettia from chilly drafts, giving her the warm welcome she deserves. As you've watched this storyline unfold, here is an additional plot twist that may have you reviewing the casting list: according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , Poinsettias are toxic to pets due to an irritant in the sap. Unfortunately, furry friends do not see our Poinsettia a s America's sweetheart, and can experience irritation to the mouth and stomach if a duet scene occurs. These are two actors I would not recommended having in close contact. Equipped with this carefully choreographed care routine, your Poinsettia is sure to steal the show and hold the stage throughout the holiday season! The Standing Ovation As the final curtain falls on our protagonist, the Poinsettia takes a well-deserved bow; leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of holiday tradition. From her enchanting origin story to the symbolic richness added to our annual festivities, this floral darling has truly earned a storied role in the spotlight. As you bring this star into your home, may the symbolism of joy, love, and renewal unfold like a seamlessly executed scene. Now, as you decorate your space with the elegance of the Poinsettia, you'll now recognize that you're not just showcasing a common houseplant; you're staging a living testament to the timeless allure of nature's grand production. Bra-vo! Until the next big show, big hugs! xx Shayla About The Plant Penthouse   The Plant Penthouse  is a flora-inspired interiors and lifestyle brand founded by Minnesota native, Shayla Owodunni. • The Bedroom Bliss Chronicles: a Home Design Tale of Tranquil Transformation

Ah, dear Reader, our paths intertwine once again! In this literature of home decor, the bedroom takes center stage, a pivotal character whose palette sets the tone for a narrative of either seamless eloquence or lingering disquiet... Within the pages of this Design Tale of Tranquil Transformation, I raise my quill to Handy Paint Products   as the protagonist (and Plant Penthouse partner) of my dreams. Accompany me on this narrative voyage, where I recount my quest in pursuit of the perfect hue that would transform my bedroom loft into a sanctuary where serenity is the final word. The Loft Prelude: Setting the Stage In the vibrant narrative of home design, the loft above my condo unfolded as a captivating canvas for a tale of tranquil transformation. Elevated above the daily hustle, this airy sanctuary awaited a painter's brush to infuse joy and vibrancy into its open expanse. The loft, with its open embrace, posed a unique challenge—to create an atmosphere that radiated happiness from every corner, a cheerful haven nestled within the heart of my bustling abode. Embarking on this journey of loft living brought forth a distinctive challenge—harmonizing colors in a space without natural divisions. The bedroom, snug within this loft retreat, beckoned for a palette that seamlessly flowed from one end to the other. Challenge accepted. A Prose Palette: Entryway Dreams and Bedroom Reality In the early chapters of my home design chronicle, the entryway stood as a blank canvas, and Sherwin Williams Vogue Green emerged as a leading contender for reinvention. Enchanted by its name, I envisioned a verdant welcome that echoed its stylish moniker. Yet, a discerning eye recognized the need for a deeper resonance, prompting a pivot to Sherwin Williams Rock Garden. The initial strokes, though promising, revealed a hue that felt a touch too ethereal for the grand entrance. Determined to find the perfect entryway overture, a final encore unfolded with Sherwin Williams Roycroft Bottle Green—a rich, sophisticated choice that transformed the entry into a space worth savoring, with Paint Worth the Wait . As I searched for the perfect hue (yet again), a delightful twist unfolded. Vogue Green, once relegated to the sidelines, lingered in my heart as a shade too exquisite to be forgotten. Recognizing its lush potential as the perfect companion to the entryway's verdant tones, I welcomed it back into this tale as a tranquil accent for my bedroom. With sophisticated charm, it emerged as the anchor of cohesion, transcending traditional color boundaries. This unexpected union with Roycroft Bottle Green set the stage for a literary narrative of cheerful shades, transforming my loft into a radiant sanctuary of joy and vibrancy, like turning the pages of a captivating novel. The journey from my entryway dreams to the bedroom reality was marked by twists and turns, ultimately weaving a narrative of color that harmonized the spaces with an unexpected grace. The evolving palette became not just a choice of paint but a narrative thread, connecting the chapters of my home with a delightful continuity. Tools of Tranquility: The Handy Products Manuscript Any other paint lo yalists out there? After the fourth time repainting The Plant Penthouse entryway, our story arc is locked in at this point in time. While Sherwin Williams is the preferred paint, Handy Products are the trusted tools along this creative journey. They effortlessly navigate through the twists and turns of my evolving vision, adapting to get the job done without deviation (...even when I change course). In the metamorphosis of my bedroom haven, Handy Products played a pivotal role as the unsung heroes behind the scenes. What stood out most in this transformative journey was the sheer ease and efficiency that Handy tools brought to my creative process. Armed with the Handy Roller Cup , specifically designed for mini-rollers and small projects, and Handy Roller Cup Liners (which reduced the clean-up fuss and streamlined the preparation phase) , I effortlessly patched up imperfections on my walls, creating a flawless canvas for the impending Vogue Green transformation. Its versatility and precision become the brushstrokes that define intricate details in these lofty chronicles. The Handy Paint Tray and Handy Paint Tray Liners stepped in as reliable companions for my larger painting needs, ensuring a seamless application of color that mirrored the vision in my mind with swift artistry. Meanwhile, the Handy Paint Covers proved invaluable, preserving the freshness of my chosen hues between each painting session. These covers, both practical and symbolic, ensured that my carefully chosen paints stayed vibrant and ready for application whenever inspiration struck (...quite often this year); and embody the commitment to sustaining the tools that contribute to the evolving story. As my storyline developed, the synergy between Handy Products and SW Vogue Green became readily apparent. The seamless application facilitated by my Handy tools accentuated the depth and richness of Vogue Green, turning my lofted bedroom space into a harmonious chapter of color and function. This Penultimate Chapter of my bedroom transformation resonates with the essence of tranquility and the artistry of transformation, marking a turning point in The Plant Penthouse's grand story. A Bedroom Blissfully Chronicled and Tranquilly Transformed As the final chapter of my bedroom’s narrative unfolded, Sherwin Williams Vogue Green graced the pages (…or walls) with its serene prose. Each stroke of paint was a carefully crafted sentence, weaving a riveting tale of transformation. In the closing pages of "The Bedroom Bliss Chronicles: A Design Tale of Tranquil Transformation," Handy Paint Products emerged as the protagonist we’ve grown to truly love, ensuring the story reached its jubilant end. With Handy Paint Products woven into the manuscript, cherished companions for both seasoned professionals and devoted DIY enthusiasts (like me) found a place to call home in this riveting storyline; not only simplifying any narrative's (…er, projects) progression but imbuing the entire painting odyssey with a touch of literary delight. Here's to a home brimming with the eloquence of tranquility, a spectrum of colors that tell a story, and the artistry of a well-painted space. In every brushstroke, a turning page; in every hue, a new chapter—transforming mere walls into a living, breathing novel of serenity and style. Cheers to a home that resonates with the whispers of timeless tales, where each room unfolds as a beloved book, and the wonder of a beautifully painted haven is eternally bound between the covers of comfort and joy!   THE END. • HONEY, PUT YOURSELF FIRST

We’re making Penthouse living a lifestyle, Residents! As I’m sure you have guessed, my lifestyle blog posts will be as eclectic as my plant collection (and kindergarten style, though let's be real, we all know this hasn't changed much ;)! WHAT'S THIS ABOUT? In this space, I will share anything from recipes I’m loving (yes, that is the recipe for the sea-salt, Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookies I bake on HEAVY rotation so enjoy and you are welcome lol), to brands/products I am trying out and want to share with you, to personal style, and all-around everyday life. We'll switch it up from week to week! After an emotional series of recent life events that hit peak disappointment yesterday (quick summary: the sofa of my dreamy dreams, replacing the one I lost in my Seattle storage fiasco, finally arrived...damaged), let’s focus in on everyday life today, shall we? Stand centerstage because we’re here to talk about putting ourselves first! TODAY'S TABLE READ The idea of putting myself first is not a concept I have spent much thought on in the past. Did you overlook that part of the script, too? To be honest, I have put more thought into learning about the unique needs of my plants for their health and happiness than I have for my own self! IMAGINE THAT. As a small business owner, I have made the investment in professional coaching and, unexpectedly, it has expanded into bettering areas of my personal life as well (I truly have a phenomenal coach). One of those personal life byproducts is the commitment to getting better at putting myself first. Such a simple concept when you string the words together on paper, but wow is it powerful for so many reasons! REHEARSING THE LINES Often times, making the commitment is the easy part, amirite? Whether it is committing to a more nutritious lifestyle, a new workout regiment, tidying up, or establishing a new standard, honoring that promise with action is where the true test lies! One way I want to honor this new commitment to put myself first (as a start because there are so many paths to achieve improvement!) is by getting more comfortable saying no . It is not so much the act of having a standard, or even saying no, it is the process of getting to the no...and not perseverating on it after. I don't know about you, but setting boundaries for what I will and will not accept has been on a sliding scale depending on the situation. While there are absolutely situations where adjustments are necessary, I want to improve how often I adjust that lever! SHOWTIME An example of this hit home for me yesterday. After walking a LONG and winding road, I felt like I was finally reaching my destination to home comfort with the delivery of my fun new sofa. Along the way, as I raised concerns about the process (and even requested to cancel the order due to the prolonged circumstances), I felt dismissed and as if my concerns were minimized. I brushed this aside in an effort to keep the relationship amicable, trusting the end result would be worth it. Through waiting on the furniture company to reciprocate my patience with a decent level of customer service, I put my needs and expectations last to be seen as 'agreeable' and 'understanding'. In this situation, unfortunately, that did NOT pan out as I envisioned! The furniture company instead used my compromising demeanor as a green light to disrespect my pocketbook and the relationship at large. Can we say BUMMER?! But what a perfect opportunity to put my new found commitment to work! I am standing on my no in this situation. The last thing I want is to agree to keep the sofa, and be holding the regret every time I see that investment! Which is the interesting part, isn't it? We can get so consumed by how others feel, that in the end, we are the only ones left compromised. I will keep you all updated on this process, but know that this is a moment that I will not be sliding the scale on my boundaries. Less of that, please! While this sofa saga is but a small example of sticking to personal commitment, I do hope that it empowers you to stay the course on whatever your improvement goal is. I believe in you! Remember, you are the narrator of this story, and the mic is yours. All my love <3 Shayla

  • WELCOME HOME!

My excitement is overflowing that you're here to visit! Let's talk interior styling and how this little concrete jungle journey came to life! Styling my wardrobe and personal surroundings has always been a means of creative expression for me, so the thought of transitioning from personal hobby to public-facing project was nothing more than a distant dream! However, once friends, then friends of friends, then social media acquaintances turned friends began reaching out with humbling appreciation for my home, plant care and styling advice requests, and exciting progress updates, it all culminated into the confidence to start this blog, The Plant Penthouse! The Plant Penthouse is dedicated to inspiring and showcasing ways to live a more vibrantly styled life. Speaking of Penthouses, d id you know that a "penthouse" can be ANY unit with a different layout from others in the building, ample outdoor space, and/or primo views? And it's not necessarily on the top floor! This means we EACH have the space to cultivate a penthouse experience; no matter the size, location or circumstance. And I SO look forward to inspiring you through my plant penthouse to bring yours to life. 💚 You can expect to see interior styling and DIY moments, lifestyle shares, & NATURALLY, a culmination of all the plant parenting I’ve learned along the way (with north of 80 plant bebes...and counting (wowza)...I CLEARLY like my money where I can see it!). PENTHOUSE CONCEPTS Because the Penthouse experience is always accompanied by a trusted concierge, what started out as an idea to simply share my interior and plant styling views through blogging organically (and quickly!) elevated into the plant styling arm of this operation, Penthouse Concepts. Penthouse Concepts brings my ‘concierge’ services to style seekers new and old desiring a curated, and sustainable, introduction to this vibrant plant life! Penthouse Concepts is rooted around interior styling and consulting with an emphasis on infusing color, pattern, and you guessed it, plants! The plant concierge service begins with an on-location consultation (sessions held virtually as well!) for a tour of the space seeking a penthouse view. This time allows us to discuss everything from intended goals, personal style, experience with plant care (for example, will this be their first plant child or are they already an Auntie to 12?), lifestyle and overall budget. Whether a client has a clean slate or a specific design in mind, I am on the job to breathe life into the space with intentionality, longevity, and style! Again, welcome home and I will be providing new styling tips for inspiration and implementation every Sunday!

  • SERVING UP LOOKS: SETTING THE TABLE FOR VIBRANT STYLE

I am so glad you could make it over! It's brunch o'clock at the Plant Penthouse, so I've set the table and saved you a seat right next to me! Today, we're serving up a full-course meal on how the Plant Penthouse living area was brought to life, with leftovers (style tips and tricks, of course) you can take back to your penthouse. Before we get to the main course, let's start with an amuse bouche of where this all began to add just the taste for what's to come! THE AMUSE BOUCHE: WHERE DID THIS ALL BEGIN? After living the West Coast life from August 2016 - July 2019, I packed my belongings into a storage unit in downtown Seattle and made the move back to my home state of Minnesota with a suitcase and my newly formed management consulting business. Finding my own space to call home was on the immediate to-do list (family is wonderful, but there is nothing like having your own , am I right?), so after a few months of searching the Minneapolis area, I purchased the condo of my dreams, which became the Plant Penthouse you see today! While I had ideas of transformation grandeur the moment I grasped the keys, I faced an incredibly humbling journey ahead. Remember that storage unit in Seattle with all of my belongings? Well, a freak roof incident caused water damage beyond repair. The most devastating part was that storage management did not feel it was necessary to inform storage tenants of the accident, so I flew in for my relocation move, only to find all of my furniture and the majority of my personal belongings completely destroyed. Again, HUMB-LING. Starting over taught me how quickly we can 'covet' things, and how quickly they can be taken away. I am exponentially appreciative for each item and experience I've been blessed with, and recognize now more than ever that everything has it's place (and time) in our lives - and to focus on that which is irreplaceable. And would-ja look at that, the rest of the meal is ready! *Dabs napkin to eye* Let's get the fine silverware! While I do that, here's a remnant of the amuse bouche , in pictures: A RECIPE FOR VIBRANCY SOUP | Time to add another layer to this meal! If there is anything I have learned on the ongoing quest to create 'home' from ground zero, it is this: ensure you can see yourself in your space . I guarantee it will instantly transform into a happy place. But here's an example of what not to do: Because I have always admired dwelling spaces with a modern, monochromatic and minimalist essence, I decided THAT is precisely what I would copy/paste into my loft. With my Pinterest board locked and loaded, I started by purchasing a neutral area rug and classic wood-framed bed. Don't get me wrong, they were BEAUTIFUL. Upon arrival, however, I felt like something was...missing. Ironically, the bed arrived broken, so I took that as my sign from Jesus to abandon the inauthentic and reunite with what represents me: color, pattern, travel and a teaspoon of the unexpected. What does that mean for you? Whether it is incorporating your favorite color, an heirloom piece, or a HomeGoods find that makes your heart sing: incorporate THAT into your space without apology. SALAD | In the same fashion that a salad dish sets the palate for the main course, I recommend visualizing your interior style, then finding ways to center it with a consistent theme. How did this come to life in The Plant Penthouse, you ask? Well, with my own Soup formula in mind (color + print + global inspiration + wild = happy Shayla), I started by shopping for a 'signature' piece of furniture and an area rug that embodied me (i.e. do I simultaneously Kool-Aid smile and nod when I see them?). While I love all the color, all the time, I was cognizant that there must be some method to the madness; and an area rug is a fun way to ground your personal style and create a cohesive flow. If area rugs are not your cup of tea, a piece of artwork, accessories, or paint/wallpaper can also accomplish the same result! Once you have decided upon your focal piece, pulling colors or unique elements from it will lead you right into a main course you'll be excited to share with friends and family! MAIN COURSE | Time to bring it all together, shall we? At the plant penthouse, by sticking to the happy Shayla formula detailed above, and using my area rug as a color-wheel of inspiration for my space, the next step was selecting elements to add substance. This is where I let my inner plant enthusiasm EXPLODE. Plants are such a wonderful way to add texture and interest to any space. And note, you do not need 80 of them to accomplish this! By placing even one plant in a corner that could use some love, on a kitchen counter, or as a warm entryway welcome, I promise you will feel new life breathed into your space. As an added benefit, plant pots are another simple way to add personal flair! DESSERT FOR THE ROAD Remember, a "penthouse" can be any dwelling space with a different layout from others in the building, ample outdoor space, or premium views! And it's not necessarily on the top floor. This means each of us has the space to cultivate a penthouse experience; regardless of the size, location or circumstance. So raise that pinky and let's do this, Residents. Until next week <3 Shayla

  • A LOW RISK INVESTMENT FOR YOUR PLANT PORTFOLIO

There you are, and here I am with more plant parenting learnings! For those who didn't know, my educational background is in accounting, so in my personal life, I have been spending time evaluating and rebalancing investments. This has got me thinking about how the plant pursuit we've found ourselves on can be discussed much like portfolio management! Before you get that second yawn in, allow me to elaborate! PORTFOLIO PLANNING I think it's safe to say you're here because you're looking for a long term strategy for success in this plant lifestyle. Whether you are just getting started, or already have a 'mature' portfolio, common questions we should think about before making a purchase (unless you have an urge to live on the edge...which I do from time to time) include, what are our overall goals? How about risk tolerance? Will I get a return on my (emotional) investment (i.e. If I spend $80.00 on that Calathea, will I be feeling some type of way if I'm prepping for a plant funeral by month end after missing a watering?)?! Step into my office, because I'm here to help. MY LOW-RISK INVESTMENT PICK I have pondered all of the questions above along my Plant Penthouse journey, and am here today to overview the most conservative investment to-date in my plant portfolio, the Pothos ( Epipremnum aureum) ! POTHOS ASSETS In the same way you construct an investment portfolio against your risk tolerance, today we are replacing stocks, bonds, and mutual funds with a low-risk plant equivalent! Pothos will forever be my 'conservative' investment choice for three reasons: Pothos are easy going in that they do not require any special soil, will not freak out from pruning when needed, and will tolerate low-light conditions (but variegated pothos do tend to show off more with bright, indirect light). While pothos do prefer a chance to dry out in between waterings to prevent root rot (i.e. when the top inch of soil has dried out), pothos provide a great visual care reminder for plant parents new and old (hey, even I need a reminder from time to time!). What I mean is they droop when they need water (so you will NEVER be confused if your pothos needs a drink!) and if you’re heavy-handed (which I was guilty of when I first started!) wilting, brown leaves and/or soaked (passed the point of being ‘moist’) soil will remind you to let up. Pothos are very easy to propagate (I've learned SO much from Planterina!) so they are the gift that can keep on giving at all plant skill levels! POTHOS LIABILITIES As detailed by the ASPCA (the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), pothos can be toxic if ingested. This is caused by insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation of the lips, mouth, and tongue and difficulty swallowing. It is recommended that you contact your veterinarian if your pet has chewed on this plant, or poison control if eaten by a child (...or adult). DIVERSIFYING As with any portfolio allocations, diversifying your assets is always a wise decision. You're in luck, because I'm here to tell you the same can be accomplished with your pothos! To name a few, here are my top three pothos cultivars (and there are many more!): The Silver Satin Pothos (shown styled below!) is incredibly tolerant of low-light conditions from my experience. The Neon Pothos is fun and bright, and also tolerant of darker spaces. The Marble Queen Pothos is great for those feeling fancy due to it's variegated leaves! As a fancy variegated lady, she also requires more light than other pothos cultivars. Through my own confusion at big box retailers, I've learned that pothos are commonly misclassified as Philodendrons . This is because the vining philodendron has heart-shaped leaves that resemble the leaves and needs of pothos. Outside of visual aesthetic (the pothos leaf shape can appear larger and have a more waxy texture), care has been one in the same for me, so I don't stress about it! DIVIDENDS Whether you are just getting started or looking to rebalance, the Pothos is a conservative investment that always pays dividends. Can somebody say cha-ching?! Here's to a healthy, thriving plant portfolio! All my love <3 Shayla Sources ASPCA Gardening Know How Costa Farms

  • Top Home Trends That Transcend the Seasons: Fall 2024 Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase

Ah, sweet fall. I don't know about you, but there is something about crisp morning air that presents a promise of new possibilities—and the joy of a good bonfire. As the leaves descend into their annual transformation, dancing from green to gold, I find myself drawn to the beauty of fresh beginnings. Much like autumn ushers in a new season, I had the joy of partnering with Parade of Homes to make my rounds throughout the Twin Cities during the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase. With so many to select from, the ability to plan our route right in the app was beyond helpful to navigate this tour with PRECISION. After a day of dreaming, I can tell you each home I visited truly embodied transformation in the most inspiring ways—each with a story to tell. With October around the corner (...how!), what better way to embrace change than by refreshing the spaces we call home? Discovering Remodel Respite: Highlights from the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase What is the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase? Think of the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase as the ultimate behind-the-scenes tour for home enthusiasts (hello, it's me!). Through this fall showcase, stunning transformations took center stage, and we were blessed to walk through homes beautifully reimagined by the top design and build teams in the area. It was an absolute joy . From complete remodels to room-specific renovations, the Remodelers Showcase is all about fresh ideas, expert craftsmanship, and sparking inspiration for your own space. Whether you’re dreaming of a kitchen makeover or a whole-home refresh, this is where you’ll find the creativity and expertise to make it happen. * Queues music * I'll be your guide to four incredible homes featured this fall, and I cannot wait for you to see what made them so special, and also, equip you with a few design trends for your own remodel—no idea is too big or too small. With that, let's begin the tour! 1. McDonald Remodeling Inc. – 2222 Mount View Avenue, Minneapolis (R12) Walking through this Bryn Mawr gem felt very on brand for fall: out with the old, in with the new. The removal of a load-bearing wall gave the home’s main level a breath of fresh air, allowing light to flow freely. Perhaps my most favorite element caught my eye immediately upon entry: a bold lighting fixture that figuratively and visually illuminated the heart of this lovely home, reminding me of autumn’s golden hour—equal parts warm and inviting. The beauty of this remodel lies in the thoughtful choices of finishes—like the soft matte cabinetry in the kitchen that plays beautifully against the natural wood tones, balancing modern minimalism with warmth. Want to take a closer look? You can explore the main level finishes here and upper level finishes here  to get a feel for the materials that make this home both timeless and modern. McDonald Remodeling’s work is a testament to how change, when thoughtfully curated, can breathe new life into familiar surroundings. 2. Fox Homes LLC  – 4236 Scott Terrace, Minneapolis (R16) Next on our tour was the personality-fillled Fox Homes’ project. When you step inside this remodel, you can feel each space blooming with purpose. The open floor plan struck me as the ultimate “reset,” allowing the home to grow and shift with the seasons of life. This remodel shines through its use of natural elements, from the walnut cabinetry to the brass pendants that make the kitchen feel stylish, yet relatable. The sleekness of these finishes gives the home a modern edge, while the earthy tones root it in warmth. Going upstairs I immediately fell in love with the master bathroom. Seeing is certainly believing!: 3. Quartersawn Design Build – 4835 Thomas Avenue S., Minneapolis (R15) This Tuscan-style kitchen immediately transported me to a cozy fall evening at home. I could envision entertaining with conversation flowing throughout this well-appointed remodel. The rich, wooden tones and gothic-inspired archways felt majestic, inviting, and full of depth. What truly stood out in this home was the custom kitchen island, beautifully finished with a stone countertop. The kitchen’s cabinetry featured a soft walnut finish, adding warmth and depth to the space, while the light fixtures brought an unexpected pop of modernity. Seeing this home’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable—and the before and after photos show just how impactful the right finishes can be. Check out the before photos here  and afters here ! 4. Fieldstone Family Homes Inc. – 24335 Dodd Boulevard, Lakeville (R35) Now, let’s talk about the dream home—a space that was evidently more than just a house; it gave the heir of a destination . Fieldstone Family Homes created a “Staycation Retreat” that rivals any fall getaway, if I do say so myself! Picture this: an indoor basketball court for hoops at your leisure, a luxury pool experience for unwinding, and a temperature-controlled cigar room for those crisp fall evenings (if that's your vibe). This home was a welcomed reminder that sometimes, the best way to transition into a new season is by creating a sanctuary at home, a place where you can recharge and embrace the moments that matter most. I am still in awe: The Trends: What I Learned from These Remodels From bold, statement lighting to custom cabinetry, the homes I visited were full of inspiration for anyone ready to embrace change. As we move into fall, these trends remind us that this season is about making room for something fresh and lasting. Here’s what I observed: Bold Lighting for Instant Drama| Lighting isn’t just functional—it’s transformative. Statement fixtures added depth and became the focal points in many of the homes, proving that bold lighting is having its moment. Earthy Tones for Warmth| Rich, natural tones like walnut cabinetry, mustard tones and terracotta accents rooted the spaces in warmth, giving the homes a cozy, timeless feel. Multi-Functional Spaces for Modern Living| These homes embraced versatility, from pocket offices to nooks for quiet retreats. Design that adapts to your lifestyle is key for modern living. Natural Materials for Lasting Impact| Whether it was stone, wood, or Corian surfaces in the kitchen, these natural materials added texture and durability, grounding the homes in timeless beauty. Custom Cabinetry for Personalized Luxury| Custom cabinetry brought both beauty and function, creating tailored storage solutions while adding a high-end feel to the space. Indoor-Outdoor Flow for Natural Harmony| Expansive windows and thoughtful plant integration blurred the line between indoors and out, creating homes that breathe with the seasons. Embrace Luxury on Your Terms| Whether it’s an indoor basketball court or a serene spa, luxury is personal. These homes showcased how to create spaces that feel indulgent and tailored to your lifestyle. The beauty of fall is that it teaches us that there is a season to let go and make space for the new, and these homes reflected that perfectly. Whether it’s adding a pocket office or transforming your kitchen, is now the time for you to start planning your home’s next chapter? Just as the seasons change, so do our homes, and this tour is the perfect opportunity to get inspired for your next renovation. If you missed this round of home tours, don’t you worry!
